Philologia philosophica Herbipolensis V: "Implicit Discussion"

03/19/2018

Conference and seminar course vom 19. - 23. 3. 2018

The Department of Classics at Würzburg University invites graduate students and advanced undergraduates in Classics, Ancient Philosophy and related disciplines to participate in a conference and seminar course on Epicureanism in Italy.

The conference consists of lectures and seminars on ancient philosophers engaging in discussions without naming their opponents and on digital editing. The conference is organized in lectures on general topics and related seminars on specific texts and problems.

The workshops comprise introductions into papyrology and paleography and exercises in editing papyri. Their aim is to give participants an overview on the material aspects of establishing a text, to teach them how to read and use editions of fragmentary texts and to provide them with practical exercises of producing (digital) editions themselves.

Courses are taught by Gerard Boter, Giuseppe Celano, Tiziano Dorandi, Michael Erler, Holger Essler, Solmeng-Jonas Hirschi, Emidio Spinelli and Nigel Wilson. The main language is English, one lecture and seminar will be in Italian, with the text distributed in advance. A provisional programme is available here.

The lectures of the conference are open to the general public. Participation in seminars and workshops is on application. The number of participants is limited to 20. Although no previous experience in papyrology or paleography is required, a sound knowledge of ancient Greek is necessary. Applications, including a completed application form (available here), curriculum vitae and one letter of recommendation may be sent in electronic or printed form to the address below and should reach the organizers by  2 February 2018 at noon. There is a fee of € 120, which will be payable at registration. In exceptional cases of financial need a reduction may be available. At the end of the course participants receive a certificate of attendance.
